A TOWN centre bar’s licence is under review after it attracted more than 20 complaints for alleged noise disturbance and loud music in the last 12 months.

Bar Moda in Queen’s Road faces losing its licence as part of the review by the borough council’ s Licensing Sub-Committee.

The committee will meet at the Town Hall on Thursday.

A report to the committee by principal environmental health officer David Steeds states licence holders Richard and Katie Martin are failing to promote the prevention of public nuisance.

Mr Steeds has spent 11 months gathering evidence about the issue and claims to have received 20 complaints from residents living nearby since February last year.

The noise from loud music has been reported to have been heard by the residents in their home between the hours of 10.30pm and 2am. Noise has also been generated by customers sitting at the tables and chairs outside the premises.

A noise diary kept by one resident recorded a ‘very distressing incident’ on July 26 last year. The entry read: “Extremely loud music and noisy customers outside. I rang Moda to ask them to close doors and turn music down but I just received abuse and was told it was the town centre and they could just do what they want. Police were called. The music was turned down for 20 minutes. I am extremely concerned to see they have a licence until 6am on August 3.”

A letter sent by the Martins to the licensing department states they have run the premises for the last eight years.

It reads: “While it is true to say they there have been complaints raised during their tenure, the number referred to in this review certainly does not reconcile with the number of occasions the business has been approached by the council and informed of such complaints.”

Committee members can either modify the conditions of the licence, exclude a form of licensable activity, remove the designated premises supervisor, suspend the licence or revoke the licence.
