THREAT TO BONFIRE CELEBRATIONS

Hastings' spectacular bonfire celebrations in October could be cancelled because of the soaring cost of insurance.

The bonfire society was reeling this week from an insurance quote of 5,000 for the event, which includes a fantastic torchlight procession, huge beach bonfire and a superb fireworks display rated as just about the best in the county.

It's one of the premium events in the town's calendar and last year brought more than 20,000 people flooding into Hastings.

Last year the insurance cost 1,600 and the society was expecting it would increase to about 2,500 this year.

They had to change insurer and the new quote is for double that amount.

It's a serious threat to the event said Mr Leech who was desperately phoning round other insurers and organisations for help.

The council which rates it as an important plank in extending the town's tourism season is also having talks with the society.
