Thief steals Littlehampton lollipop man's sign

LOLLIPOP man John Muir found himself in a sticky situation when a thief stole his sign.

The vital piece of equipment went missing last week from the porch of a house where John kept it close to his crossing in East Street, Littlehampton.

The retired post office worker fumed: "I couldn't believe it. What may appear to be a prank or a bit of mischievous fun to somebody, perhaps collecting a 'souvenir', genuinely and seriously puts the lives of young children and parents at risk.

'Dangerous, reckless and foolhardy'

"Playing with the lives of young children is extremely dangerous, reckless and foolhardy."

The morning he discovered the theft, John was unable to stop vehicles, but had to wait for gaps in the traffic so he could see children safely across the road.

John, who has been a lollipop man for three years, was given a replacement sign in time to cross children when they were leaving school later that day.

Anyone who finds the lollipop sign should take it to Littlehampton police station.
