Thief steals £200 from pensioner

A 92-year-old woman was targeted by a thief who stole £200 from her in a distraction burglary in Willingdon Avenue, St Leonards.

It took place at around 2.20pm on Saturday (March 7) when the victim had just returned home from shopping. She found a man on her doorstep who asked if he could have a toilet roll. The woman was struggling with bags and the man offered to help her carry them . While she went to get a toilet roll the man was left alone in the hallway for a short while.

After he left the woman discovered her purse and contents, including some £200 cash, were missing.

The man was described as white, in his 40s between 5ft 8ins and 6ft tall, slim and with dark hair. He had a dog with him.

A 37-year-old man from St Leonards has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and bailed until Thursday, April 30 while enquiries continue.
