Teenager collapses and dies in street on her way home from party

A TEENAGER from St Leonards collapsed and died in the street on her way home from a party, despite frantic efforts to revive her.

The 18-year-old, who has not yet been named, started having trouble breathing as she walked home with a friend in the early hours of Tuesday.

She collapsed outside Wickes store at Brett Drive, Bexhill, part of the Ravenside retail and leisure park, possibly striking her head as she fell to the ground.

Her 20-year-old friend dialled 999 for an ambulance and was left distraught as paramedics fought desperately for more than an hour to try to save her life. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.Police say there were no suspicious circumstances and the coroner is awaiting results of a postmortem examination.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of an 18-year-old woman having breathing difficulties. When we arrived at 1.40am she was suffering a suspected cardiac arrest.

“Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was attempted until 2.40am. It seems like the patient had suffered breathing difficulties and had collapsed and possibly hit her head.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “We understand the 18-year-old had just left a party nearby.

“Despite the efforts of the ambulance staff she sadly died at the scene.

“Police are treating the death as unexplained but not suspicious.

“The coroner’s office has been informed.”
