PATIENTS waiting to see their GP can now play ping pong on the first table tennis introduced to a doctor’s surgery
A table tennis table has been placed at Station Plaza health centre in the surgery waiting room.
The idea was the brainchild of Dr Brian Higginson and is believed to be the first such venture in the country.
He said: “This is an interesting experiment which we hope will give our patients an opportunity to enjoy themselves while waiting for an appointment.
“Table tennis has the advantage of offering a trigger for social interaction while some exercise and fun at the same time.”
Station Plaza teamed up with the English Table Tennis Association in order to provide the table, which is free to use by visitors.
Diccon Gray, the association’s delivery and facilities manager, said: “It is so easy to pick up a bat and just play – no cost, no kit and only a partner with five or 10 minutes to spare is all that is needed.
“We believe this is a first in the whole country, and this trial is just one of several ways that table tennis is being promoted in non-traditional environments.”
