Swimmers can make a splash for charity

A LEISURE centre is encouraging people to take part in a national swimming contest to raise money for a cancer charity.

Summerfields in Bohemia Road is one of the venues that will be participating in the World’s Biggest Swim across the country on Sunday, April 10, from 2pm to 6pm.

There is still plenty of time to set up a team or train for a personal challenge.

This year the swimathon is raising cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the funds generated will go towards providing Marie Curie nurses, to care and support cancer suffers or those with other terminal illnesses.

To enter log onto www.swimathon.org and sign up for a 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k personal challenge, or rally round friends and family and enter a team to take on the Team 5k challenge.

Last year more than 20,000 swimmers nationwide joined the swimathon and raised more than £2 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Jeff Hart, managing director of Freedom Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile cause and encourage people to start 2011 off by joining this great fundraiser.

“Participants will have fun, contribute vital funds and improve their own fitness into the bargain.”
