Sussex Air Ambulance reaches first target

Six months after the Appeal was launched at Beachy Head the Sussex Air Ambulance has now reached its first target of £50,000. This means that the Kent based helicopter will be available to fly to medical emergencies and trauma in Sussex from February 1.

Charity Chief Executive David Philpott said: "We knew we were getting close in the run up to Christmas, but the announcement last month by West Sussex County Council, that it was backing the campaign for an dedicated helicopter to serve Sussex and Surrey, added the extra impetus we needed to take us to this, our first objective."

The Sussex Air Ambulance Appeal is being conducted by the Kent Air Ambulance Trust. The next goal is to raise a further 200,000 so that the charity can lease a second air ambulance. The Trust is now advertising for a Sussex Campaign Manager who will be based at Worthing Fire Station.

An Air Ambulance Service is already provided by the Sussex Police Helicopter, which flies from Shoreham Airport with Paramedics onboard.

This new Air Ambulance service however, also carries a specialist trauma doctor, and will complement the excellent work the police are already doing and should bring great comfort to the people of Sussex who travel its dangerous and congested road network.

David Philpott added: "It is a great privilege to know that from 1st February we will be able to save lives in the county of Sussex, much of which is only a few minutes' flying time from our airbase at Marden.

"We look forward to working with our friends at Sussex Ambulance Service in Lewes who will undoubtedly find this helicopter an invaluable resource at their disposal."
