A spokesman said they do not know how many staff were taking part but hoped to make sure it was 'business as usual'.

People were advised to put rubbish out as normal. Any not collected by 5pm would be collected the following week.

Recycling will be collected where possible. If missed it will be collected two weeks later.

A spokesman said: 'We apologise that for some people it may mean a month has elapsed between collections.'

A spokesman for East Sussex County Council said: 'It is regrettable that there has been a national call for industrial action given the usual positive background of management/union relationships with the county council.

'We are particularly concerned about the effect such industrial action will have on service users, school pupils and their families.

'We are working hard to ensure that essential services continue during the strike action. We are monitoring the situation closely, and will make sure that those with the greatest need are not left without vital support.'
