St Leonards care home told to '˜improve safety' by inspectors

Health inspectors told a care home in St Leonards it needs to improve its safety but praised the '˜warm and open atmosphere'.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said Crest House in St Matthew’s Road needed to review its individual and environmental fire risk assessments to ensure people’s safety was maintained.

The inspectors’ report said: “Accident and incident forms did not include any details to show how an injury had occurred or what response had been put in place to help prevent re-occurrence.

“Corresponding daily records and body maps were not always completed. Therefore it was difficult to get a clear picture of what had happened.

“This meant people may be at risk of further injury.

“The registered manager told us they were in the process of changing the forms to a new format which would include more information.”

CQC inspectors said, however, that during their visit they received a lot of positive feedback from residents, staff and relatives about Crest House.

Their report said: “People felt Crest House was homely and had a warm and open atmosphere.

“They were encouraged to remain as independent as possible and encouraged to participate in regular activities. People had their privacy and dignity respected and staff knew people and their preferences well.

“Staff knew people well and displayed kindness and compassion when providing care.

“People and staff spoke highly of the registered manager and provider and told us they felt supported by them. Staff told us that the manager spent most days at the home and therefore had a good overview of the home and knew everyone living there well.”

Jo Crawford, owner of Crest House, said: “We have been here since 1989, have a very good standing in the community, and are very passionate about our care. We are a very caring home.

“We have not kept abreast of all that is required but we have new care plans which have all been implemented.

“When the MP, Amber Rudd visited our home recently she said we were the best one she had been to out of the 15 care homes she visited that day.”

The inspection took place in February but the report has only recently been published.
