Marina Beach, St Leonards, and Pelham Beach both received Seaside Awards from environment charity Keep Britain Tidy for their tidiness and facilities.

But the St Leonards beach was also given the coveted Blue Flag Award – the international standard for the best beaches in the world.

Hastings Borough Council leader Peter Chowney said it was a ‘fantastic result’ especially as it is the first time a beach in the town has won both awards.

“We are very proud of our beaches and of course they attract many visitors every year,” he said.

“Together with partners and local community groups we have been actively promoting litter picking events and the comprehensive water improvement works that have taken place in Alexandra Park have all added to this success.

“The Seaside Award and Blue Flags will be flying high. Residents and holiday makers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the flags gives them the reassurance they want; a guarantee they have the best facilities and cleanest beaches this summer.”

The awards recognise and reward beaches that achieve the highest standards of beach management and, in the case of bathing beaches, meet guideline water quality.

This year 25 beaches across the south east will be flying flags that tell the public they are among the best beaches in the country.

Eleven of the region’s beaches were given the Blue Flag Award and 14 received the Seaside Award.

Keep Britain Tidy’s coastal awards manager Paul Todd said: “It is great that we have been able to award more beaches this year with Blue Flag and Seaside Awards.

“As an environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy is committed to improving the quality of the places where people live, work and holiday and these winners have proved their commitment to providing the best possible beaches for locals and visitors alike.

“The public can be sure, if they visit a Blue Flag or Seaside Award winning beach, that they are visiting one of the best beaches in the world”.
