A GROUP of staff and volunteers at a sheltered home for elderly people embarked on a mammoth walk from St Leonards to St Albans to raise money for a new minibus.

The team of 12 people, two of whom are residents at Ridge House, started the 86-mile walk from the Boscobel Road home in St Leonards on Wednesday (April 6)

They walked to the headquarters of Abbeyfield, which owns Ridge House, and arrived in St Albans in Hertfordshire the next day.

The walk was organised by Ian McNulty, house manager at Ridge House.

Mayor Kim Forward and actor Christopher Timothy arrived at the starting line on Wednesday to show their support, and joined them on the first leg of the sponsored walk.

May Davies, aged 98, also headed off on the trek with the team by walking a couple of miles.

The walkers, many of whom are members of the Hasting Ramblers Association, devised the route so it would pass a number of Abbeyfield-owned homes. They are hoping to secure further funds in donations collected along the way.

More than £2,000 has already been raised so far, but the minibus is likely to cost more than £25,000.

Mr McNulty said: “The minibus is a lifeline providing the means for residents to go on outings, shopping trips and provides transport for doctor and hospital appointments, pleasure drives and visits to see the Christmas lights.”
