Sidley - probelm of travellers

RESIDENTS have voiced their anger over the continued presence of travellers on land in Sidley.

Caravans have been on the privately-owned field, off Watermill Lane, since July.

Several neighbours have called the Observer this week with concerns but did not wish to have their names published.

One said: "It has been a nightmare. We are being disturbed by the noise and rubbish left on the road."

"They seem to be getting help (with living conditions) and we are getting nothing. It doesn't seem fair," added another.

Residents claim social services have moved in one large 'permanent' caravan for the group and another is expected.

Rother District Council have said their officers are making regular visits to the site to check on the well-being of the travellers and nearby residents, but have said the onus is on the land owner to move people off the field. Bexhill Police are also monitoring the site but say they have no legal grounds on which to move the travellers on.

Inspector Martin Mann of the Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Children's Services are trying to support the family because one of the family members is disabled so they are well-known to them.

"The land owner initially couldn't be contacted but he has told them they are trespassing.

"The police will not use any powers to remove them because we do not have the grounds to do so. Because they are on a field which is private property it is up to the land owner to get them off."
