GENEROUS shoppers at a St Leonards supermarket dug deep to raise more than £2,000 for the victims of the earthquake and the tsunami which devastated parts of north east Japan.
The Hastings Rotary Club swung into action as the terrible scenes unfolded and arranged to have a collection at Tesco in Churchwood Drive.
It collected a total of £2,200 which will be used to help the Shelter Box organisation supply much- needed relief tents which can accommodate 10 people and include blankets, tools, utensils, and children’s toys.
Spokesman Wencke Georgiadis said: “The Rotary Club would like to say a big thank you to Steve and Kat at the Tesco store for the speedy permission for us to collect, to all the helpful staff and above all to the people of Hastings and St Leonards who never fail to surprise us with their generosity.”
n Meanwhile the Rotary Club of Hastings is holding a quiz evening at Azur on Wednesday, April 20.
It costs £15 per person to enter - which includes either a buffet or a barbecue depending on the weather. Six people are needed per team although the organisers will accommodate smaller groups. For more information or to book your place call David Hooper on 07939 509615 or email email@example.com.
