A serial shoplifter has been jailed for 15 weeks after stealing hundreds of pounds worth of food and cosmetics from supermarkets and shops.

Holly Pennington admitted stealing the shopping including meat, cheese and cosmetics from stores and garages in St Leonards, Hastings and Eastbourne.

The offences were committed between 17 February and 2 September last year. In some cases Pennington simply tried to walk out of the store with items without paying for them.

When the 27-year-old appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 22 January she pleaded guilty to six counts of theft, one count of failing to answer bail and one count of committing offences while the subject of a conditional discharge.

The shoplifting offences included: the theft of £148.22 of cosmetics from Andersen’s Pharmacy in Old London Road, Hastings, on 2 June, £250 of meat from Asda in Battle Road, St Leonards, on 9 July, of groceries from Morrisons in Queens Road, Hastings, on 2 September. Pennington, of Warrior Square, St Leonards, was jailed for 15 weeks.

Detective Constable Mark Waughman said: “Pennington is a serial offender who already had more than 30 convictions for theft before she committed the latest offences.

“The sentence shows that the courts will not let offenders off lightly even when the thefts are not of items worth huge amounts. “Thefts from businesses are not victimless crimes. They put the jobs of Sussex people at risk and we will not tolerate them.”
