COUNCIL bosses have handed out almost £4,000 in grant money to seniors’ groups around town.

Hastings Borough Council (HBC) gave the cash following a VAT rebate from last year.

The successful applicants, who were given 100 per cent funding for their projects, will use the money in a variety of ways, including a monthly games afternoon for seniors, a Reminiscent Project and an Alice in Wonderland Grandparents’ tea party.

Councillor Jay Kramer, the council’s lead member for community, said: “I am really delighted that we have been able to fund such exciting, fun and innovative projects which will have a real impact on the well-being of older people.

“The money was left from a VAT rebate in 2010 and we wanted to put it to good use for seniors across the town.

“The grant distribution process was agreed with the help from a seniors’ consultation group.”

She added: “More money is still available, and details of the next round of bidding will be announced later this year.”
