SEAL HEADS UP RIVER

A STRAY adult seal was spotted by a dog walker in the River Ouse on Tuesday morning '“ three miles from the sea.

Marine mammal medic Trevor Weeks and Alec Anscombe and Kevin Harlow from British Divers Marine Life Rescue were monitoring it this week to make sure it came to no harm.

The seal is an adult harbour seal, fairly common at Denton Island, Newhaven, but rare further upriver.

Mr Weeks believes the very high tide on Tuesday had something do with its arrival.

'Although it is unusual for a seal to come so far inland, it has happened before, but normally when there is very rough weather out at sea,' he added.

'We are keeping an eye on it.'

The initial report was that the seal was injured or ill, but this proved not to be the case.

It went back into the Ouse on Tuesday evening but re-appeared on the banks on Wednesday morning.
