Scouts' bonfire night go-ahead despite vandals

Scout leaders have pledged to go ahead with their biggest event of the year in Rose Green in spite of vandals.

The volunteers with Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts spent this week rebuilding the bonfire ready for the big fireworks party on Friday, November 14.

This is a highpoint of the group's calendar. Scores of spectators are attracted to their site in Sefter Road and the funds they raise go towards the scouts' activities.

But the bonfire which was intended to be a centrepiece of the attraction was set alight by vandals on November 5.

They got into the camp site and torched the large pile of wood. Two fire crews from Bognor Regis fire station were called to the scene at 9.11pm last Wednesday.

They spent 50 minutes there damping down the surrounding area while they let the bonfire burn itself out.

Jill Atkinson, the scout group secretary, said the incident would make no difference to tomorrow's spectacular. "We will not let vandals spoil our evening," she stated. The bonfire comes courtesy of Barfoots of Botley from pallets they provide from the nearby Sefter Farm.

Gates will open for the firework night tomorrow at 6pm as planned with lift-off for the professionally-staged display of rockets and bangers at 7.30pm.

A barbecue will be provided. Admission will be 3 for adults and 1 for children. A family ticket for two adults and two children will cost 7. A raffle will also be held for Children in Need.
