Two local schools excelled in the recent Town Sports Tournament.

A combination of team spirit, hard work and excellence saw The St Leonards Academy were announced as the overall winners of Town Sports Middle School Section for the second year running.

An 80 strong team from the school took part in the all-day event held at Ark William Parker Academy which pits the very best athletes from the twelve Hastings and district schools against each other, all hoping for some individual, year group team and overall victories.

The sight of a St Leonards Academy student climbing onto the podium to receive a medal became a familiar sight. By the end of the day, the Academy had won a record number 51 medals, a phenomenal 23 of these being gold.

Lee Boniface, Head of PE at The St Leonards Academy, said: “The team ethic and determination to produce their very best shone through all day and was highlighted many times – the students thoroughly deserved this victory”.

Ark Blacklands Primary Academy claimed victory in the younger age group breaking local records on the way.

Nearly 60 children from the school’s years 4, 5 and 6 took part in the competition. The children competed in athletic field events including javelin, shot putt, discus, long jump, triple jump, as well as sprint and middle distance events.

Not only did Ark Blacklands’ girls win the trophy for the 6th year running, the boys team narrowly edged out Silverdale to win the boys’ shield by just one point.

The impressive results mean that Ark Blacklands have secured the overall trophy for the 6th year in a row and broke two records.

Head Lorraine Clarke said: “We’re hugely proud of the very impressive results from our pupils. They competed with a great sense of sportsmanship and fair play and even broke some local records.”
