School pupils in Bognor warned of the dangers of drug driving

Twenty schools in West Sussex '“ including ones in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Midhurst '“ are among the first in the country to take part in a project to educate youngsters about the dangers of mixing drugs and driving.

Delivered in conjunction with GEM Motoring Assist, Get Clued Up is a new web-based interactive campaign aimed at sixth forms and colleges.

County council leader Cllr Henry Smith said: "I am proud 20 schools in West Sussex have signed up to take part in this pilot project, as the statistics make worrying reading.

"The Police Research Group estimates a 400 per cent increase in drug-driving over the past 15 years and according to the RAC Foundation, young passengers are now twice as likely to be driven by someone impaired by drugs than alcohol. This issue must be tackled and I believe education is key."

Students getting involved in the campaign will design an advertisement to raise awareness of drug-driving among their peers. This could be a poster, leaflet, short film or a play.

The winning ad stands the chance of winning 1,000 of Sony products for the winning school, plus their entry could be used in a future advertising campaign.

The pilot scheme could be rolled out across the UK.

Schools taking part include: Chichester High School for Boys, Chichester High School for Girls, Bishop Luffa C of E School, Chichester, Lavant House, Chichester, Bognor Regis Community College, Midhurst Rother College and Chichester College.
