A SCHOOL has scooped an award after encouraging pupils to use more environmentally friendly ways of getting to school.

As part of Walk To School Month, 15 schools across Hastings entered a competition to be named the most sustainable.

And West St Leonards Primary came out on top after successfully getting 63 per cent more pupils to ditch the car and either walk or cycle to school.

Across the county, the competition saw an estimated 1,500 car trips saved and, as a reward for its efforts, West St Leonards will be given a mini woodland area on school grounds.
