Luckily the rain held off for the procession which saw bonfire societies from across Sussex carrying flaming torches through the streets of the ancient town to the fire-site on the Salts.

The Rye society led the fiery procession in its distinctive red and black colours.

Taking part were drumming groups and local students from Rye College’s carnival group.

Rye Fawkes was chaired down to light the huge bonfire, which signalled the start of a spectacular fireworks display.

The local bonfire season comes to a close next Saturday (November 21) when Robertsbridge holds its celebrations.
