Runners aid horse rescue centre

TWO runners in the Hastings Half Marathon have raised hundreds of pounds for the Brownbread Horse Rescue charity, based at Ashburnham.

Claire Gerrard, who lives in Hastings, contacted the centre before the run with the offer to help the horses in this way.

She and her friend Danielle ran quite a good time and delivered a proportion of the funds to the Trustees last Sunday.

Claire has also become one of the volunteer field officers for the charity following her report of lack of care given to five horses in Rother district.

Claire continued to monitor the situation and sent back frequent reports as well alerting the head of welfare to the location for a visit.

One of the horses had an open flesh wound down to the bone and was forcibly removed with prosecution of the owner under consideration.

Dinty Steains, head of Welfare at the centre, said it was the worst case of abuse that she had seen this year.

The rescue centre has its open day on May 18. Enquiries on 01424 892381.
