THE committee has reluctantly decided to close the present premises after 46 years in Wellington Square.
This is due to dwindling numbers of members and the factor that access by handicapped or disabled is getting harder as the years go by. The stairs are also hard to manage by the more older people, thus discouraging visitors and members alike.
The branch will continue to keep going during the upheaval and notices will advise members and the general public about new premises as soon as we are able to move. This may take a couple of months or more to happen.
We intend to go ahead with collections for the Battle of Britain Wings Appeal from September 7 to September 15 and also the Battle of Britain Commemoration church service on Sunday, September 15 at Blacklands Church Hastings. The service starts at 6.30pm and all are welcome to attend.
There will be a farewell party held at 26 Wellington Square where we will be selling certain pictures or memorabilia, date to be advised.
Once the branch is established in new premises a recruiting drive will be made for new members and it will be looking for younger people not necessarily ex-RAF servicemen or women.
It is possible that the present club may change its name e.g Combined Services Club or something similar, the idea is to attract ex-servicemen/women regardless of service, emergency services, police, coast guard, lifeboat crew/associates and any other youth organisations associated with military interests.
Other ex-service organisations will be invited to use our premises for meetings and social gatherings once we have re-established our bar and settled down to normal business. We appeal to the more able members to help us with preparing the move and also the jobs that will arise during the interim period.
Our telephone number during this period is 07542 178323. We are meanwhile looking for property to buy which has no stairs/steps at the entrance and near the town centre.
