Rother sets out seafront questions

PROTESTERS and petitioners have 'misunderstood the content and purpose' of the seafront regeneration scheme.

That is the view of Rother District Council, which this week sought to clarify the 5.1 million Next Wave project.

The move comes as the town's hottest talking point develops into a major Observer debate.

Rother's list of 'frequently asked questions' tackles the recently submitted petition against the scheme, by saying;

*East Parade is not part of the scheme and no Edwardian shelters will be touched.

*A 300,000 investment is required anyway to simply repair and conserve the Colonnade. The council has also been approached in the past by investors and entrepreneurs asking them to consider upgrading the area with cafes, bars and restaurants. The scheme hopes to explore this possibility.

Other clarification points include:

* They envisage a 'honey pot' of cafes, bars and restaurants for the Colonnade. A marketing exercise for any expressions of interest in the units is being carried out - if there is no interest the council will review its options.

* What happens to the putting green depends on public comments. The proposals allow for the crazy golf and putting green to remain if it's what people want.

* The council believes the new shelters are indicative of a more fun and contemporary approach and will replace late twentieth century shelters on West Parade. No Edwardian shelters will be replaced.

* A new rowing club facility is still planned and has the backing of the club.

Presenting the question, 'Isn't it all just a waste of money?' Rother says: "We don't think so! Bexhill is in competition with other seaside towns, not only to attract visitors, but also to promote itself as a good place to live, work and invest. This project will give an important boost to Bexhill's seafront and send a strong message that the town is looking forward. For that reason it's an important part of the council's corporate plan."
