Residents praise emergency services after pipe bursts

Owen Jones, 42, was woken up at 4.45am by the sound of fire engines and went to see what was happening.

“It was like a river was running down the road. We didn’t realise what had happened until the police and fire service knocked on our door to tell us what was going on.

“I think the whole thing has been handled really well.”

Charlie Silver-Burr, 32, said: “We woke up this morning at about 5am because of the flashing lights and the whole street was flooded. The water level was up to our garden gate.

“There was a fireman and a police woman outside who were on duty and I had a chat with them. They told us that Southern Water were on their way. They were very helpful.

“As far as I can see the repair work has gone well. There have been about 30 workmen around which is reassuring.”

A nine-inch PVC main burst in the early hours of this morning at the junction of Westcourt Road and South Farm Road, causing extensive flooding. To see images of the burst water main, click here.

In a statement, Southern Water said: “Our customer service team is on-site speaking to all those affected.

“We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Southern Water have been approached for further comment.
