Residents evacuated from St Leonards care home after Storm Angus

Vulnerable residents from a care home in St Leonards had to be evacuated after their home was damaged due to Storm Angus.

The property in Tower Road West had its gable end on the side severely damaged following the high winds and torrential rain.

Part of the roof was also taken out following the storm overnight on Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20, which left widespread damage across 1066 Country.

Ed Sayer, proprietor, said: “Five residents were evacuated and we spent all of Sunday evacuating the premises in order to rehouse them.

“The damage caused was quite significant, as the gable end collapsed and took out the entire roof of the back of the property.

“We had firefighters come to block the area off.”

The care home is run by East View Housing, which houses people with learning disabilities and challenging needs in the community throughout Hastings and St Leonards.

Mr Sayer added: “We were about to register a new care home on The Ridge and that’s where the residents were evacuated to. So now they are living in a brand new place.

“It was a great effort by staff who work at East View Housing, those who were not on duty, who came in to help evacuate the property in Tower Road West, as it was evident that the residents could not remain there due to the level of structural damage, both externally and internally.

“Hastings Community Transport came out voluntarily to assist and we had two great guys from Bexhill Removals who dropped everything on a Sunday to help pack up all the residents’ belongings in order to get them to safety.

“All these individuals, who would modestly say it was nothing, performed a great service to ensure the safety of people with such vulnerability.”
