Mr Baker hopes the new prices will lure drivers away from using the A26 and A27 routes into Lewes in favour of the rail links, to ease congestion and reduce pollution.

The plan is already subscribed to by Lewes District Council and East Sussex County Council and Mr Baker is also calling on major private and public sector employers to follow suit.

'I warmly welcome this move,' he added.

'This is an important step towards making public transport more appealing.

'I hope it proves a resounding success and I urge my constituents to make use of the new scheme wherever possible.'
