Plans for Rustington supermarket set to be approved

PLANS to rebuild Rustington’s Sainsbury’s superstore, in New Road, look set to be approved by district councillors, on Wednesday afternoon (July 25).

Arun District Council’s Development and Control Committee will decide whether or not plans to demolish the existing 6,258 square metre site and replace it with a new shopping centre of more than 12,000 square metres should be given the green light. The proposals could see the introduction of 100 new jobs into the area and has been widely supported in the village.

There have been 45 letters of support received in favour of the plans compared to just eight against. However, some residents have pointed out that the increased size in the store would create more traffic on the already stretched section of the A259.

Others have said that it could also jeopardize smaller businesses within the town.

The plans, if approved, would also see the extension of the store’s on-site parking to create 551 spaces for customers.

Those wishing to attend the meeting can do so but public spaces are limited. It will take place at the Civic Centre, in Maltravers Road, Littlehampton, from 2.30pm.
