No more printed bin calendars through the post in Hastings, Rother and Wealden

The calendars, which are posted out to residents each year, give details of what bins are collected on what dates.

But at £100,000 per year, councillors have decided the costs of producing the calendars are too high compared to publishing the same information online.  The decision was taken despite public support for keeping the paper calendars in a resident survey.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the joint waste and recycling committee on Friday (October 23).

The committee is made up of representatives from East Sussex County Council, as well as Hastings Borough Council, Rother District Council and Wealden District, which are members of the joint waste partnership.

The same meeting also saw councillors call for the trialling of electric bin lorries in Hastings.  Biffa, the contractor, said it would look into this possibility and report with more details.

Councillors also agreed to  look at changing he way bulky waste collections can be booked, due to issues arising from the current system.

Hastings and Rother residents, meanwhile, may be set to get thicker pink recycling bags in future, following a number of complaints that current bags rip apart too easily. 

The cost for thicker sacks was likely to be broadly similar, councillors heard. They will also be made of recycled materials.
