Boost for Horsham cyclists with £30,000 investment in cycle shelters

Horsham District Council is working with West Sussex County Council to deliver four covered, double and single deck cycle shelters that can accommodate around 20 bikes each.

The cycle shelters will be situated in Medwin Walk backing on to the side of Boots, Park Place at the rear of Piries Place car park, and Lower Tanbridge Way between the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Forum.

A need for a facility has been identified near the Bishopric for cyclists approaching the town from the west but a suitable location has not been decided.

Helena Croft (Con, Roffey North, HDC’s cabinet member for Horsham town, said: “I am delighted that the provision of town centre cycle parking is being improved in this way, making the centre more accessible by a more sustainable form of transport.

“There are currently no covered cycle shelters in the centre of Horsham and cyclists are often seen penetrating areas which should only be used by pedestrians.

“These new shelters will help clear the pedestrian zones and motivate more people to cycle into town. It will also contribute towards less traffic congestion in the centre so it’s a win win all round.”

The investment project will also improve existing cycle parking facilities in the town centre with additional stainless steel cycle hoops.

Pieter Montyn, WSCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said that sheltered cycle parking will be more secure and convenient for visitors, shoppers and people who work in the town.

He added: “This improvement to town centre cycle parking in Horsham will promote and encourage alternatives to travelling by car.”
