POLICE are warning residents to be on their guard in St Leonards after a burglar entered a house and stole a purse while the occupants were still on the premises.
The incident happened around 6.45pm on February 10 at the property in Southwater Road.
The burglar entered at basement level and stole a purse from inside.
The resident saw the burglar leave their home and described him as a white male, of slim build, wearing dark clothing.
PCSO Lucy Paffett, of the Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “A lot of burglaries happen on an opportunistic basis.
“For example a ground floor window left open when you’ve gone out or a front door left open while rubbish is being taken outside.
“These are the type of burglaries that can be avoided by closing windows and doors behind you.
“Residents may wish to consider leaving a radio or television on when out during hours of darkness or to leave lights on.
“These simple actions will put off many opportunist burglars as it gives the illusion that someone is at home.
“However, to protect your property you can property mark it or register it free at immobilise.com.
“Police forces nationwide check Immobilise for any property that is recovered and it will be returned to its owner.
“This was reported at a busy time of day, if you were in Southwater Road and remember seeing this man or someone acting suspiciously please contact police on the non-emergency number 101 or call Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555111.”
