Police warn of break-in spree

A series of callous burglaries by con artists has led police to urge Bognor Regis residents to be wary of unexpected callers to their homes.

Officers say people should be cautious of doorstep sellers as well as stepping up their vigilance and household security.

They also advise householders to be suspicious of anyone wandering in the street looking at houses or as if they are trying to find something.

Since the start of this year, about 40 distraction burglaries have been committed between Chichester and Worthing. Offenders have pretended to be waterboard or gas officials, tree surgeons, gardeners or have simply used the ruse 'that there is a problem with the water and I need to check your pipes'.

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tilzey said: "Those using deception methods to gain access to people's homes and steal commit the most callous crimes against the most vulnerable victims.

"Bogus callers are convincing liars and anyone can be taken in by them. Never let anyone into your house unless you are sure they are genuine.

'A genuine visitor will always make an appointment first, so you should be wary if someone turns up unexpectedly. Do not feel embarrassed about using a door chain.

'A genuine visitor will not be offended and will expect you to take precautions. Always ask for proof of identity and check it carefully, keeping the chain on the door.

"Genuine callers will carry identification with their photograph and details of their company or business. However, don't assume that a caller is genuine just because they are wearing a uniform, or smart looking clothing with a badge or logo.

"Always ask to see an ID card, and take your time to check the identification. If the caller is unexpected, ring their office to confirm their identity - and always use the number in the telephone book rather than the one displayed on their ID card.

"If in doubt - keep them out. If they offer to do work on your property say 'no thanks' and shut the door."
