AFTERNOON GARDEN MEETING: Is being held by the Flower Club at Owlets, Riddens Lane, Plumpton, on Wednesday from 2.30pm to 4pm. The entrance fee is £3 and tea, coffee and cake will be served. There will also be a tombola, bring & buy and a raffle. All welcome to go along and enjoy a convivial afternoon.

JUMBLE SALE: In aid of St Peter and St James Hospice takes place at the village hall on Saturday August 20. Please take jumble to the hall in the morning (between 9am and midday) along with any donations of cakes and tombola prizes. Also do go along at 2pm for lots of bargains, books and refreshments. INFORMATION EVENT: Is on Saturday August 27 from 9am to12.30pm at Plumpton College. Prospective students can find out more about what the College offers at this event, including the wide range of successful land based courses, made to measure courses, training opportunities and apprenticeships. At the information morning college staff will help with course choices and the application process, as well as offer information about student support, subsided transport across Sussex, loans, finance and careers. There will be an opportunity to speak with specialist academic and support staff, along with current students. Visitors can then take a tour of department student facilities as well as student accommodation on campus. BALCOMBE WALK: With the Footpath Society is on Sunday August 27. Meet at Balcombe church (lower lay-by Map Ref: 307 310) at 2pm. This four mile walk will include Boundary Road, Forest Farm, Woodwards Farm, Balcombe Lake and Church. JUMBLE SALE: In aid of the Pavilion takes place at the village hall on Saturday September 3. Please take jumble donations to the hall from 9am to midday and do go along at 2pm, there are sure to be lots of bargains. Along with jumble there will be a tombola, refreshments, good as new items, bric-a-brac, books, toys, clothes and linen.

SHEEP: From Plumpton College were judged a success at the recent New Forest and Hampshire County Show. Staff and students studying on agriculture programmes at Plumpton College entered Southdown sheep into many classes at the show and came away as show winners. The shearling ram was judged interbreed show supreme champion. The College aged ram and aged ewe were judged second place winners. Henry, a pupil studying at Plumpton primary school, won third prize in the young handlers class with the College senior stock ram. The winning team also won first prize in the ‘group of three’ class.

SUMMER SHOW RESULTS: The horticultural show last month saw a magnificent display of summer flowers and vegetables and congratulations go to all who were awarded prizes but especially to Diane Ellis who was awarded a Royal Horticultural Society Bronze Medal for the best exhibit in the horticultural classes, the Vice President’s 1930 Challenge Cup for an arrangement in a basket, the Flower Club Cup (1997) for her floral art and the Parker Challenge Cup for her Queen’s 90th birthday display. Royal Horticultural Society Certificates were awarded to Dorothy Castleton for best fruit, Diane Ellis for best flower, Malcolm Beard for best vegetable and Amber Botterill for best cookery. The following trophies were also awarded The Lanaway Trophy (wine) Reg Lanaway, Sussex Country Gardens Challenge Cup (pot plant) and Festival Challenge Cup (one variety of flowers and vegetables) to Ken Beard, Novington Challenge Cup (most points in domestic classes) to Sue Akers, Royal Horticultural Society Banksian Medal (most prize money in horticultural classes), Gray Challenge Cup (collection of 4 vegetables) and Fergusson Challenge Cup (collection of six vegetables) to Malcolm Beard, Committee 1990 Cup (tray of three items for a street party) to Evelyn Botterill, Nixon Challenge Trophy (vase of five roses) to Richard Watson and Plumpton Top Vase (vase of mixed flowers) to Julie Russell.
