Playwright launches major religious event in Bognor

Playwright Richard Everett launched one of the largest religious events Bognor Regis has seen.

Richard was the guest of honour to celebrate the town's second Bible Week. It starts this Sunday at the Royal Norfolk Hotel and heralds eight days of talks, exhibitions and workshops.

Richard lived up to the thought-provoking reputation earned from his play, Educating Angels, in his speech.

He encouraged his audience to be wary of separating the religious from the secular, to avoid hiding behind religious jargon and to engage fully with the times.

Those present included local clergy and leaders, members of the week's steering committee and staff of the hotel's owner and the week's host, Christ for the Nations UK.

The week '“ based on the theme of Thy Kingdom Come! '“ is being held after the success of last year's inaugural occasion which around 4,000 people attended.

Everyone is encouraged to join in the 2009 week. Local churches are well-represented and keen to explain their work.

Most events will take place in the large marquee which has gone up on the hotel's lawn. They include acts of worship, Bible teaching from early morning until about 9pm.

Some other activities will be held in churches and other venues around the town. Among them are art exhibitions, concerts and talks.

Those taking part include Christian rock band Phatfish, singer, songwriter and worship leader Rob Newey and his band, along with worship leader Graham Fairbairn.

Arun Community Church is well represented. First of its contingent to appear will be Chrissy Gisbey. She is taking the place of Julie Sheldon at the opening meeting to speak about her battle with cancer.

Another member of the church taking part is escapologist Steve Legg at a family morning next Saturday.
