The 500 homes initially earmarked for land east of Roundstone Lane has been increased to 600 on the understanding that football pitches and other sports facilities could be provided elsewhere, by extending the Palmer Road recreation ground.

The draft masterplan for the development claimed this arrangement had the support of Angmering Parish Council, but at Monday night’s meeting, parish councillor Albert Mariner said he had been ‘shocked’ to read the claim, as the matter had not been discussed or agreed by the council.

Asking how the draft had come to state that the parish council supported relocating sports facilities away from Roundstone Lane to Palmer Road, Cllr Mariner said: “The statement is incorrect and very misleading.”

Cian Cronin, a senior planner with Arun District Council, which drew up the masterplan with prospective developers for Roundstone Lane, said the statement had been based on impressions given during discussions with parish councillors.

“If that’s not correct, I’m sure we will hear that tonight,” he added.
