PICTURES: Suffragette exhibit held for plaque appeal

Held at Littlehampton Library in Maltravers Road, Littlehampton, last week, the display featured newspaper cuttings and photographs of folk dancer Mary Neal, Cicely Hale, who worked with the Girl Guides and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first female doctor in Britain.

The exhibit also featured suffrage pioneer Millicent Fawcett, who was president of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies from 1897 until 1919 and lived in The Firs in Rustington for several years.

Organiser Kevin Page hoped it would convince Arun District Council to erect memorial plaques to these women at the clock tower in Littlehampton’s High Street ahead of the centenary of women getting the vote in 2018.

“These women are very much part of the rich history of the area. I don’t think there is another seaside town that has so many suffragettes. It is important that we mark the remarkable contribution of these women, and the centenary is fast approaching.”
