But Eileen Lintill, one of Petworth’s two district councillors has told the town council she will not be in the room when the matter is debated as she will declare a personal and a financial interest.

Cllr Lintill’s home in Downs View Road is one of the most directly affected by the town council’s plans.

Roger Hanauer who is leading the project, told fellow town councillors he had just received the last designs.

He would be taking all the designs to the Open Spaces committee to recommend a preferred contractor to full council. The town council then has to submit a planning application to the South Downs National Park Authority.

Michael Peet told fellow councillors he believed they should meet Cllr Lintill and other residents most affected by the plans.

“They don’t have an insight into how these things work and I think we should try and allay their fears.”
