A young lifeguard has won an award for his work in teaching others life-saving skills.
Peter McCarthy, 18, was presented with the Presidents’ Award when Hastings and St.Leonards Voluntary Lifeguard Club recently held their recent AGM.
It completed a brilliant year for Peter who also received the ‘Young Lifesavers of the Year Award’ from the Sussex branch of the Royal Life Saving Society.
He was presented with his latest award by chairman of the Sussex branch Doug Simmonds.
There were also presentations to a number of younger members for their achievements over the past year at the Club.
Di Cooke, from the Club, said: “Peter is 18 years old. He has been a member of the club for four years.
“During that time he has not only achieved his own lifesaving and beach lifeguard awards but become an assistant instructor and then a ‘full instructor’.
“He teaches at the club every Friday evening, helps to teach the dangers of open water during the summer season as well as helping to provide safety cover for events that the club attends.
“He is well respected by all the members and his commitment is remarkable.
During Drowning Prevention Week (June 22 - 26) he has offered to visit schools and provide some vital water safety advice to 9 and 10 year olds.
“To this end we have written to schools and hope that we have a positive response to share both the water safety message and promote the club.”
The Voluntary Lifeguard Club meets on Friday evenings at Summerfields Leisure Centre, Hastings, from 8pm to 10pm. The club provides training for all of the Royal Life Saving Society UK awards from Rookie (aged about 8 years) upwards.
Pool and Beach Lifeguard courses feature regularly in our training programme.
The Beach Lifeguard courses provide a focus for open water training together with boat handling and emergency response.
