Swimmer goes missing off Hastings

A huge rescue operation was launched in Hastings after a swimmer went missing in the sea yesterday (Monday, May 25).

The Coastguard, police, RNLI and coastguard helicopter were deployed after the woman disappeared during the afternoon.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “The Hastings and Bexhill Coastguard Rescue Teams, the RNLI lifeboat from Hastings, the Lydd Search and Rescue helicopter and Sussex Police were involved in a search after receiving a 999 call to report a missing swimmer at Hastings Beach at 1.40pm yesterday (Monday, May 25).

“The swimmer was found safe on land following an extensive search.”

A spokesman for Hastings RNLI said: “We were tasked by the Coastguard just after 2pm to look for a missing female swimmer off of Grand Parade.

“The inshore lifeboat was launched and undertook a shoreline search before being stood down.”
