The St Leonards Academy confirmed a student tested positive for the virus.

A spokesman said the student was asymptomatic, but the positive case was picked up by in-Academy Covid-19 testing.

The Universtiy of Brighton Academies Trust, which runs the school, said: “The University of Brighton Academies Trust can confirm that a pupil at St Leonards Academy has tested positive for COVID-19. As a precaution, those who may have come into close contact with the affected pupil have been told to stay at home for a 10-day self-isolation period.

“As the tested pupil was asymptomatic, we would like to highlight the importance of in-academy COVID-19 testing in preventing any further health and safety risks to our pupils. Our priority is to ensure all pupils have access to the high quality of education that they deserve.”

St Leonards Academy wrote to parents of the students who were in close contact with the confirmed case.

Those students will be required to isolate for ten days, which the school says will end on April 7. The school remains open to all other students.

In the letter, the school said: “We have been made aware that we have a confirmed positive case of coronavirus (Covid-19) at the St Leonards Academy.

“We have followed the national guidance and, following a risk assessment with Public Health England (PHE) advisers, have identified that your child has been in close contact with the individual who has had a positive test result for coronavirus (Covid-19).

“In line with the national guidance, your child must stay at home and self isolate until April 7, 2021.”
