St Leonards residents unveil plans for new community garden at Silverhill

A group of volunteers aims to set about turning Duke Green in St Leonards into a new community garden.

The initiative is being backed by Hollington councillor Margi O’Callaghan, who said: “The idea will be that everyone pulls together and we can grow beautiful sensory plants such as lavender in the area and also to create a grow your own veg space. The project wants to make the most of the space at the moment it Is not used it it’s capacity.

“The chair of the new group is Claire Carr, from Paynton Road; Treasurer is Wendy May of Silverlands Road, while Stella Starr of Alma Terrace is the secretary.

“There have been plenty of fabulous ideas coming from the first meeting. We have been given provisional permission from Hastings Borough council.

“It’s fabulous to see the community coming together and wanting to commit to such and amazing protect.

It brings community unity, brings life to a nice space to an area that is not used very often and it will get people out and help keep them fit.

“The group are still looking for more volunteers, there will be another meeting at the Duke Green, Duke Road, on Saturday August 15 at 10am. Everyone is welcome to take part. Any comments please email me at [email protected]

Claire Carr said: “I would like to say how much we are all looking forward to making this space a more positive and attractive area for the community. We have some amazing and very enthusiastic volunteers brimming with ideas but we always welcome new members and would love to see you on Saturday August 15.

The committee would also like to thank Councillor Margi O’Callaghan, who is one of our local councillors in Silverhill ward, for suggesting the project and getting us started. We hope we can do her vision justice and that this area can bring the community together in a positive way in such an uncertain time.”
