St Leonards man who built ‘Eiffel Tower’ in front garden told to take it down - pictures

A St Leonards man who built a replica of the Eiffel Tower for his wife after plans for a trip to Paris were dashed by Covid-19 has been told to take it down.

Nick Charman, 56, of Alma Terrace, and his wife Bernie had hoped to return last year to mark the anniversary of their honeymoon to the French capital in 1995. However, Nick has been told his tower breaks planning regulations and must come down. They’ve been unable to take it down because they have both had Covid. Bernie, 47, said: “Nick built the Eiffel Tower model completely from scratch as a nice surprise for me and put it in the front garden.” A spokesman for Hastings Borough Council said: “We now understand that the tower will be removed in the spring, and we will not pursue the matter at the moment provided the owner confirms the structure is safe.”
