East Sussex Highways and Sussex Police were forced to shut New England Lane for approximately two hours on Monday morning (March 8) after what appeared to be tree cuttings were dumped in the road.

As the incident related to fly-tipping, Rother District Council was called to remove it and the road was cleared and reopened by 11.30am.

A Rother District Council spokesman said: “The fly-tipping in New England Lane, Sedlescombe had made the road impassable but we were able to respond quickly, allowing the road to reopen within a couple of hours of being alerted.

“There is never any excuse for fly-tipping, which is a blight on the local environment and a criminal offence carrying a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

“Householders and businesses have a legal duty to only dispose of their waste to a licenced carrier. We examine any material dumped for evidence which might support a prosecution and do not hesitate to take action in the courts when we have sufficient evidence to support a case.

“We’d urge anyone with information about this incident or others to contact us and help us bring offenders to justice.”

East Sussex Highways said it was made aware of the incident by Sussex Police and one of its highways stewards arranged for the road to be closed.
