Sid, who is in his 70’s and a keen walker, explained: “I did a short 8km walk on Monday exploring footpaths among the buildings in North St Leonards starting in Hollington.

“I wanted to take a look at the lake that is situated behind the Hospital and noticed a group of people all dressed the same having a break on the grass in the sun.

“On being told that I stood and applauded them as I feel that they get little recognition for what they do and by putting themselves in harm’s way. I then thanked them from me and on behalf of the general public.

“On leaving to continue my walk they thanked me and I walked away with a lump in my throat. Heroes every one.”
