Hastings home damaged by fire which broke out in recycling rubbish

Police are appealing for information after a fire broke out in recycling rubbish in the early hours of the morning.

Two crews from Bohemia Road and The Ridge were called to reports of the fire which broke out in recycling rubbish in Hill Street at 2.10am last Monday, January 23.

The fire had been spotted by a neighbour who was walking home and quickly alerted the residents of the house.

The front door and hallway of the property were affected in the blaze, which meant the residents of the home had to escape through a window.

A spokesperson for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 02:10 to reports of a fire. Rubbish outside the front door was alight. Affecting the hallway of the property on Hill Street.

“Two people in the domestic dwelling were rescued by neighbour prior to our arrival.

“Crews used one Hose Reel to extinguish the fire.

“Incident handed over to police to investigate.”

Sussex Police added: “The front door of a property in Hill Street, Hastings, was damaged by a fire that broke out in recycling rubbish in the early hours of Monday morning (January 23).

“Firefighters alerted police after they were called to the incident at 2.20am.

"A passer-by had spotted the fire and alerted the occupants of the house who escaped safely.

“The cause of the fire has not been determined, but anyone with information is asked to report to Sussex Police online or call 101 quoting serial 78 of 23/01.”
