The action is part of a co-ordinated national campaign by Extinction Rebellion, who are calling on the government to 'act now in the face of this global emergency which will effect everyone'.

A spokesman for the group said: "The response to Covid-19 shows that big changes can happen fast, and scientists agree that urgent action is vital. The climate and biodiversity crisis is a significantly greater threat to humanity than the current pandemic. Yet carbon emissions are rising, and our government continues to subsidise fossil fuels and other high-carbon industries.

"We want to live. The government has failed us. They know the scale of the problem, yet still they do nothing to protect us. It is up to us to demand immediate action to give future generations a chance to survive. Following this action, we'll be travelling to London to join Extinction Rebellion on the streets from September 1st. We urge everyone to join us."
