The animal was discovered near Galley Hill, between Bexhill and St Leonards, on Thursday (April 30).

Jakki Armfield, who found the seal, said it looked like it had suffered an injury - possibly bite marks - to its face and head.

She said a man from the council had arranged removing the seal from the beach.

However, Rother District Council said it had been taken back out to sea before it could be removed.

A council spokesman said: “We were made aware of a dead seal being washed ashore in Bexhill on Thursday, April 30, and our officers attempted to arrange for its removal.

"Unfortunately we were unable to do so before the tide came in and took the seal back out to sea.

"Checks were carried out the following day, but the seal had not washed up on any of Rother’s beaches.”
