People asked to speak out over illegal waste dump in Walberton

The location has not been publicly identified by the Environment Agency. But its specialist environmental crime team has been investigating the law-breaking activity for months.

Among the vast amount of household and construction waste that has been left was a distinctive leopard print board and a large wall poster that may provide clues about the culprit.

Nigel Oliver, the agency’s area environmental crime officer, said: “This location has been a real problem for us for some time.

“It’s vital that we identify where the items came from and who dumped 
them there.

“If an innocent party has handed them to a waste contractor for disposal, then they will not be in any trouble.

“But they will have critical information for us to catch those responsible.

“This kind of environmental crime is unacceptable as it can cause pollution, harm to wildlife and it creates a total eyesore for those living nearby.”

Those who run illegal waste sites can be fined up to £50,000 in magistrates’ courts and face unlimited fines in higher courts, community punishment orders or prison sentences of up to five years.
