Pensioner led to safety from Arundel fire started by tea light

AN elderly Arundel woman was led to safety by firefighters in the early hours of this morning (Friday, September 5) after a tea light started a fire at her home in Bond Street.

The incident has prompted West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to issue a renewed warning of the dangers of candles and tea lights.

A neighbour raised the alarm at 1.10am, reporting that they could smell smoke coming from the mid-terrace house.

Three fire engines from Arundel and Littlehampton were immediately sent to the scene and on arrival found smoke coming from a first floor bedroom. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went inside and led the woman to safety.

Crews used a hose reel to damp down the fire and the woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by an ambulance crew.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "For many people of all ages, candles are at the centre of birthdays, family occasions, religious festivals and the home itself. Candles, oil and incense burners and joss sticks make a good atmosphere.

"However, candles, as with any naked flame, can be a cause of fire, especially in the home and particularly where there are children or animals. In this case it was very fortunate that the next door neighbour smelt smoke and quickly called 999, as the property did not have a working smoke alarm fitted."

Anyone using candles or tea lights is advised to:

* always place candles and tealights well away from curtains, furniture and drapes and always out of draughts;

* keep candles out of reach of children and pets;

* never leave a burning candle unattended;

* keep candles away from hair and clothing;

* always place candles upright in suitable holders, which cannot fall over easily;

* always make sure that candles are properly extinguished, especially before going to bed;

* NEVER put tea lights on top of television sets or other plastic surrounds such as baths. The results could be devastating. Always ensure that the tea lights are in proper holders.
